Deputy Pm Chavalit Negotiates With Pad Protesters

BANGKOK, Sept 29 - In an attempt to defuse political tensions in Thailand, newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said Monday he had held negotiations with a core leader of the self-proclaimed Peoples Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

Gen. Chavalit, a former prime minister, told journalists that he had decided to serve the country again and was assigned by Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to oversee and bring an end to the violence currently continuing in the three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

The deputy prime minister said he was also assigned to deal with border issues, solving the problem of poverty in the country and to negotiate with the anti-government protesters of the People’s Alliance for Democracy.

Members and supporters of the PAD have been demonstrating against the government since May 25 at the Makkhawan Bridge on Rajdamnoern Avenue, not far from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and now also occupy Government House, the seat of the prime minister.

Speaking optimistically that the PAD protest could end in future because “we speak the same language”, Gen. Chavalit said he had talked with the PAD core leader but not in detail.

One PAD core leader, Chamlong Srimuang, a retired major-general, told journalists Monday that the former prime minister had spoken with him by telephone.

More talks are still needed, Gen. Chamlong said, but Gen. Chavalit did not ask the protesters to leave Government House.

Asked whether a formal negotiations aimed at ending the marathon protest would be held between the PAD leadership and the government, Gen. Chamlong said it would not be soon “because of differing opinions”. (TNA)
