Demand For French Culture Minister Resignation In Pedophile Row

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand disclosure in his autobiography, The Bad Life, where he describes paying boys for sex in Thailand has encouraged calls for his resignation, after he was criticized in a political chat show by National Front (NF) leader Marine Le Pen. This came after Mitterrand caustic attack on US over the arrest and impending extradition of French film-maker Roland Polanski for his 1977 conviction for having under-age sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Frederic Mitterrand attack on the US over the extradition of Polanski had stated: “Just as there is an America which is generous and which we like, so there is an America which is frightening, and that is the America which has just revealed its face.

On TV, NF Leader Marine Le Pen called for Mitterrand?s resignation to restore France’s moral integrity. As proof of Mitterrand’s unfitness for the role of Minister Culture, Ms Marine quoted a passage from ?La mauvaise vie”/”The Bad Life, where Frederic Mitterrand, nephew of ex-president François Mitterrand, had confessed:

The profusion of very attractive and immediately available young boys puts me in a state of desire that I no longer need to hinder nor hide…as I know that I will not be refused,. This criticism was echoed by Socialist Party spokesman, Benoît Hamon, who complained ?As a minister of culture he has drawn attention to himself by defending a film maker and he has written a book where he said he took advantage of sexual tourism, querying how it would be possible for France to continue fight against sex tourism with an apparent practitioner of paedophile-abuse serving in Cabinet. France has recently launched an anti-sex-with-minors campaign, prosecuting French citizens for sex with under-age prostitutes in Thailand. Benoît Hamon continued ?I find it shocking that a man can justify sex tourism under the cover of a literary account.

Openly gay, Mitterrand, who became French culture minister in June, 2009, described a time prior to joining the government, enthuses with delight over visiting Bangkok brothels:

I got into the habit of paying for boys…All these rituals of the market for youths, the slave market excite me enormously. One could judge this abominable spectacle from a moral standpoint but it pleases me beyond the reasonable, adding that his attraction to young male prostitutes continued even while being aware of “the sordid details of this traffic.”

Seeking to allay critics following his book publication, Mitterrand, in a 2005 France-3 TV programme, denied he was a pedophile, saying he only uses the term “boys” loosely. He said that homosexuals commonly call all men boys. They say boys when you are 60 years old, denying that the male prostitutes were under age.

Commenting on the NF and Socialist attacks, Mitterrand declared:

“I am flabbergasted. If the National Front drag me through the mud then it is an honor for me. If a leftist politician drags me through the mud then it is a humiliation for him,? declaring it was a “disgrace” that his fellow leftists had joined in the criticism. Elysée Palace spokesman, Claude Guéant, said that Mr Mitterrand had been expressing his ?own sensibilities in his support for Mr Polanski, whereas MP Chantal Brunel, while admitting that Mitterrand?s autobiography was sordid, downplayed the row over the revelation, declaring it was a non-event?.
