BANGKOK, Dec 7 - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said the approaching general election might be prone to vote-buying, since opposing sides were fiercely contesting one another.

He also called on grass-roots people not to buy votes and help ensure a high voter turnout.

In a speech delivered to about 300 members of the Social Welfare Council of Thailand, Gen Sonthi charged some candidates contesting MP seats had been offered as much as 30 million baht to run under tickets of a perticular party.

He also predicted the Dec 23 election might be riddled with vote-buying and electoral rigging.

The deputy prime minister did not elaborate but commented a large number of former MPs would likely be re-elected, given such a short period of time for others to contest.

Gen Sonthi urged grass-root voters to realise grave, unbecoming consequences which might otherwise emerge if they sold their votes in exchange for money. He encouraged eligible voters to go to the polls on Dec 23 so voter turnout could reach 70% as targeted.
