David Beckham, Man Utd & Lakshmi Mittal Top Forbes List

David Beckham was confirmed once again as the most well paid and highest earning football star on the planet by Forbes. Beckham was listed at number one, with reported earnings estimated at US$40 approximately $40 million.

International, the 26th of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Beckham, currently playing for American side LA Galaxy, is estimated to have earned over $138 million since joining the Major League Soccer side in January of 2007. His 2009 earnings have be table at $40 million, with $33 million of that coming from various endorsement deals, including; adidas, Giorgio Armani, Motorola and Sharpie.

Beckham’s continued dominance of the Forbes rankings is subject to speculation as he is currently out of action for the season with an achilles injury and is  in the twilight of his career at 34. Along with the resignation of the director of Brand Beckham Ltd, manager of the stars financial affairs, some quarters anticipate the superstars fading popularity and public attraction to continue on the downward spiral.

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid was second on the Forbes list earning an estimated $30 million whilst teammate Kaka and AC Milan’s Ronaldinho were third and forth respectively, earning $25 million. The universally acclaimed best player, 22-year-old Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi was sixth on the list after teammate and Frenchman Thierry Henry, both estimated to have earned $20 million in 2009.

Footballs richest team owners included Indian-born steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal at number one with an estimated worth of over $28.7 billion. Lakshmi is a 20% stake holder in London outfit, Queens Park Rangers along with Formula One president/CEO Bernie Ecclestone who was number 10 on the list at $4 billion. Spanish fashion magnate Amancio Ortega, $25 billion, owner of Deportivo La Coruña, was No. 2. Whilst Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, was No. 3 with $13.5 billion.

In terms of the football clubs, the “most valuable” was deemed to be reigning English Premier League champions Manchester United, worth an estimated $1.835 billion. In Man Utd’s shadow is Spanish giants Real Madrid ($1.323 billion), perennial title contenders, Arsenal ($1.181 billion), followed by Barcelona ($1 billion) and Bayern Munich ($990 million). The 20 “most valuable” clubs are in Europe’s five major leagues, with seven in England, five in Germany, four in Italy, two in Spain and two in France.
