Cyber Red-Light District Finally Gains Approval From ICANN

Official approval has been granted for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have previously fought-off attempts to create the new “top level” domain following protests from various conservative groups and board members.

International, the 26th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The board of net overseers ICANN gave initial approval for the creation of .xxx at a conference in Brussels this week. The approval will kick-off the fast-tracked process which has been in the wings for creation since its initial rejection in 2005.

Registrar Company ICM Registry, backers of the domain, stated that the creation of .xxx will make it much easier for authorities and censors to filter out and/or remove inappropriate content from the web. Chairman of ICM Registry Mr. Stuart Lawley said it was “great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content.”

ICANN’s next move is to ensure that ICM Registry has sufficient backing from the adult industry and prospective websites to justify the creation of a new “top level” domain. This is just one of the necessary requirements to meet final approval. On the same token ICM Registry have stated that they have already acquired more than 110,000 pre-reservations for a .xxx domain name and expect to go live with the first sites in early 2011.

Following a lengthy application process and an initial illegitimate denial of approval on the .xxx domain in 2005, ICM Registry stated that they were pleased to have finally been granted the go-ahead. Meanwhile, ICANN has admitted that during the initial approval process several “mistakes” were made in relation to neutral, objective and fair documented policies.

Despite some board members still feeling “uncomfortable” with the decision to approve .xxx, they realised it was not possible to deny it as ICM Registry had duly followed all the rules and procedures required when setting-up a new domain.
