Care of Modern Furniture

With furniture having changed over the years so has the method of care as the materials are no longer made from heavy duty chunks of wood, but veneered MDF (medium density fibreboards) which is made from fine bits of wood chips and sawdust which has been compressed with glues to make it strong then covered with a thin veneer of wood.

The positioning of modern furniture in the home is very important as too much sun light can be damaging, fading and drying out the wood, fabrics and causing veneers to peel. When ever possible, furniture should be repositioned in order to even out the fading process and the use of shades or curtains to diffuse harsh sun light will help lengthen the life of your modern furniture.

Placing furniture in front of direct heat or air conditioning vents should be avoided as heat can cause the furniture to dry out, loosen joints, veneers and any inlays to come loose which will decrease the quality and life the modern furniture.

Moisture and humidity in the air can cause wood and particle board to expand and contract damaging the veneers and causing joints to loosen with doors and drawers sticking when trying to move them.

Over a long period of time, high humidity leads to growth of mould which if not taken care of will rot and possibly become infested with insects. Maintaining humidity can help minimize damage and prolong the look and life of the furniture so a dehumidifier or humidifier is recommended if living where the climate is humid or very dry.

Keeping your modern furniture clean and polished will help with its appearance. Furniture oil will enhance the look of modern furniture, but over time will attract dirt and leave a residue.

Furniture wax made especially for wood and veneer gives a high quality finish to modern furniture. Applying a thin coat of wax a couple of times a year will help protect the finish. Leave the thin layer overnight to dry then buff up with a soft cloth.

Use a very slightly damp, soft cloth to dust the furniture in between waxing on a regular basis and do not use spray polish as this often contains silicone which will leave a film behind and can cause problems with any required restoration at a later date.
