Burmese Workers Asleep as Fire Rages Above Them in Pattaya

A short circuit is thought to have caused a fire that broke out in a Russian Tour Operators business in Pattaya, as Burmese workers slept in the rooms below.

Pattaya, 22nd January 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: At 05.30 a.m. Police Lieutenant Phatsa Detpakun, investigations official, from the Pattaya police station, received notification of a fire at a commercial town house, ( project name: Thomsan House ) 338/7, opposite Soi 5 Moo 12 Phra-tam-nak Road. , Nongbrue, Banglamung, Chonburi. Police Lieutenant Krisakorn Thonginn, Officers of the protection division Pattaya, 5 fire trucks rushed to the scene.

The building was one of a row of 10 commercial townhouses where flames licked through the top floor of the four story building. Officials broke into the burning house as well as the ones either side in order to bring any residents out to safety. It took Ten minutes for fire fighters to dampen the fire as it began to take hold.

Investigation to determine the cause of the fire showed that it had started from the ceiling, spreading to the rest of the room.

On questioning Ms. Kanida Suptaweephong, 36, sister of Mr. Phuwit Mhastonmad, the proprietor of the Russian tour business, and the affected building, she told police that the building was rented to store his equipment and also used as a place of resident for his workers, who are usually Burmese Nationals. There are around thirty workers who occupy two of the floors. When the incident occurred, the workers were asleep in the rooms below while Mr. Phuwit was not present.

No one was hurt in the incident and the reason for the fire is yet unknown, but officials believe it started though a short circuit of the air conditioning. The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be around 100,000 Thai Baht.

Officials will be investigating the incident for further information as to the cause.
