Myanmar, 13th August 2010: Myanmar, was formerly known as Burma and has been under military rule since 1962. This vote will be the first since Nobel Peace Laureate Aun San Suu Kyi’s party won a landslide victory in 1990, a result unrecognized by the country’s military junta.

The elections are believed by Myanmars critics, to be intended only to create a façade of democracy, the vote being tightly controlled with a new constituent reserve of 25% for the new parliament. The junta announced a new election law that excludes electoral participation of any political party who has been convicted in court. This bars Suu Kyi from taking part in the upcoming election.

Suu Kyi, aged 64 was convicted by a Myanmar court in August 2009 for breaching the terms of her house arrest after an American, swam across to her lakeside house in Yangon, uninvited. Her ongoing detention was extended to November 2010, after a court rejection on her appeal for release in February. She has spent more than 14 years under house arrest.

The junta’s powerful mass movement, the USDA (union solidarity and development association)    is now a political party under the leadership of the military’s prime minister Thein Sein. The junta’s new law forced the NLD (national league for democracy) to choose between honoring Suu Kyi ‘s party or risk the party being declared illegal. The NLD chose to bow out of the elections.
