Broken by Karin Slaughter

The third book that features investigator Will Trent and Sara Linton who form the core of this novel and are testaments of the author’s ability to develop strong characters.

Sarah goes back to Grant County for Thanksgiving where she’s coerced into helping the suspect murderer of a college girl which was thought originally to have been a suicide. Later a stab wound is found at the back of her neck and because of some crooked dealings with the local police force Will Trent is called to help with the investigation.

The plot is multi-layered and keeps you entranced, knowing some of the answers, but only enough to keep you guessing about the next step. The pace of the story builds up nicely as it reaches its climax.

The setting is atmospheric with recurring characters that make you feel as if you are visiting old friends. If you have read the authors previous books, then you will notice how the events have had an effect on the characters and will find yourself looking forward to the next event and enjoy finding out what happens next.

Somehow the murders have been solved, but the reason behind them are not known with lies and hidden issues not fully resolved and while the storyline is truly gripping and peppered with stomach churning forensic details, it is the characters that are truly absorbing.
