PATTAYA – February 11, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; A poorly-shot video clip posted by someone using the name Phanuwat Aminsen has gone viral on YouTube, and also on a Facebook page named “YouLike.” The video’s Thai title states, “A Citizen Got Beaten,” and shows a February 9 fight between two officers and a Thai man at the Bali Hai pier.

The incident began when two officers in a pickup truck accidentally backed up into a Thai’s parked motorbike. The motorbike owner sought an apology from the officer, but an argument erupted. One officer tried to use force on the Thai man, who fought back aggressively while the other officer tried to restrain the two combatants.

The brawl was witnessed by a crowd of bystanders including tourists. At one point, the officer trying to break up the two combatants called for onlookers to help him, but no one moved. The incident occurred in front of the eyes of locals and tourists who were walking to the ferries to go to islands, the commentary said, adding, “It’s an embarrassment in front of the eyes of foreigners.”

At one point in the clip, the fighting was stopped, but then flared up again, as finger pointing escalated into another round of beefing while the onlookers cheered. After the video clip was posted on the Internet, it spread wildly on the social media of Facebook and YouTube.

Most of the viewer comments condemned Thai police brutality. But the brawling officers were later discovered to be local municipal officers and not the police. However, Pattaya’s deputy mayor will take disciplinary action against the two officers for fighting in public.
