Bolt & Williams On Top at Laureus Awards Ceremony

Two-time Oscar winning actor Kevin Spacey hosted the glittering Laureus Awards Ceremony which was held at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. Jamaican sprinter and world record holder Usain Bolt along with US tennis champion Serena Williams were the big winners on the day taking out the top men’s and woman’s awards respectively.

Laureus Awards, March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Usain Bolt’s continued dominance of the sport in 2009 where he won 3 more gold medals at the World Athletics Championships. His amazing feats earned him a second Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, having also won the title following his success at the 2008 Olympic Games.

US tennis superstar Serena Williams won the World Sportswoman of the Year award for the second time, her first being in 2002. Her success at the Australian and Wimbledon tennis opens were enough to earn her the 2009 award.

Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button took-out the Breakthrough of the Year Award for his feats in winning the World Driver’s Championship, whilst the Brawn GP manufacturer, which Button drove for, took home World Team of the Year.

Winning the US Open Title in only her third tournament since making a remarkable return to the Woman’s Tennis Tour saw Belgium’s Kim Clijsters take out the World Comeback of the Year Award for 2009. Clijsters had been absent through injury for a period of almost two years prior to her 2009 return.

The Disability Award went to South African swimmer Natalie du Toit whilst the World Action Sportsperson of the Year when to Australian Surfing sensation and three-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore.

The prestigious Laureus Sporting Awards are consider world sports premier honours and as such, winners are chosen by a panel of 46 judges made up of past sporting greats including: Giacomo Agostini, Marcus Allen, Franz Beckenbauer, Boris Becker, Ian Botham, Sergey Bubka, Nadia Comaneci, Kapil Dev, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sean Fitzpatrick, Dawn Fraser, Cathy Freeman, Mika Hakkinen, Tony Hawk, Mike Horn, Kip Keino, Edwin Moses, Nawal El Moutawakel, Robby Naish, Alexey Nemov, Morné du Plessis, Hugo Porta, Monica Seles, Daley Thompson, Alberto Tomba and Steve Waugh.

Among the guests in a packed auditorium at the awards ceremony were; Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, British film stars Hugh Grant and Clive Owen, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Mika who earlier drew up to the red carpet in a spectacular gull-wing Mercedes-Benz, England Test cricketer Andrew Flintoff, world boxing champion Amir Khan, Olympic rowing legend Steve Redgrave, and supermodel Jessica Michibata.
