Bangkok Subway Attack Inaccurate According to Deputy Premier

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Monday dismissed a Puea Thai Party claim of a possible bombing in the capitals underground rail network as false and unsubstantiated. Mr. Thaugsuban further denounced the opposition party statement on Sunday as being an attempt to cause apprehension and fear amongst the public.

Bangkok, the 30th of August 2010: Deputy premier Thaugsuban, in the face of Peau Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit’s claim of a potential subway bombing next month, urged the public not to panic over “groundless speculation” made by the government’s opposition party.

Mr. Prompong on Sunday claimed that he had received information of the possible bombing next month from a security agency’s intelligence report. However, Mr. Thaugsuban and several other security agent heads have dismissed the allegations as “unfounded” stating that no reports confirming Mr. Prompong’s claims had been received.

In his position as the director of the Center for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) Mr. Thaugsuban stated, “no security-related agencies have ever reported possible sabotage at the underground stations. I believe the news was spun for some specific purpose, but for what I don’t know.”

Despite the dismissal of a possible attack, the deputy premier has since instructed all concerned officials to maintain vigilant, round-the-clock surveillance of possible target locations, including public transport systems and power plants, in an attempt to prevent any attacks of the nature suggested by Mr. Prompong.

Meanwhile, National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Tawin Pleansri reaffirmed deputy premier Thaugsuban’s statement, stating that the NSC had not received any information to support Mr. Prompong’s claims, but expressed the need to carefully monitor the fragile situation. Mr. Pleansri also mentioned his firm belief that Mr. Prompong has never attended any CRES meeting to have attained such information as stated in Sunday’s announcement.
