Bangkok Poll Wants General Election Soonest

BANGKOK, Aug 26 (TNA) -- Four out of 10 metropolitan Bangkokians -- 39.96 per cent -- want Thailand‘s general election to be held as soon as possible, according to a new Suan Dusit poll.

Over half the respondents addressed Thailand’s social unrest as their prime concern. Over 36 per cent of 1,379 total respondents living in Bangkok and surrounding areas said they wanted to see countrywide peace, and another 15 per cent said they wanted an end to the violence in the three southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

Regarding the general election which interim Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont has said would be held in December, one-third — 32.7 per cent — said they worry it will be delayed while 29 per cent said they were concerned about a new coup.

On the hectic activities of the political parties and politicians preparing to contest the general election, over 33 per cent said they believed old faces of politicians would return in the election while 10 per cent said they are not paying attention because only politicians would gain and not the people.
