The Thailand Convention Exhibition Bureau reported that Ayutthaya has outbid other provinces, including Chonburi and Chiang Mai, winning the title to host the World Expo 2020.

The Cabinet has also approved a budget of 300 million Baht allocated for the bid campaign.

World Expositions are international exhibitions licensed to and organized by member countries of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), which both supervises and regulates these expositions.

Thailand only joined the BIE as an official member in 1998, although Thailand has been participating in the international exhibitions since 1862.

A World Expo today is regarded as the third most significant global event in terms of its economic and cultural impact, after the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.
