Arab Goes On Mad Jerusalem Bulldozer Rampage

In Jerusalem city centre, earlier today, July 3, 2008, a Palestinian man drove a bulldozer into a bus and several cars in Jerusalem, killing three people, and injuring dozens more before being shot dead by an irate pedestrian, who took the law into his own hands.?

Police said the attacker, Hussam Dwayat ,30, from East Jerusalem, had no known affiliations to militant groups, although Prime Minister Ehud Olmert termed the incident a terrorist attack, and condemned it as “an act of senseless murderous violence”. Although disclaimed any responsibility or links with Dwayat, Hamas termed it a “natural” response to ” continued aggression against our people in the West Bank and Jerusalem”.

Eyewitnesses saw the bulldozer, driven by a construction worker, initially crash into several cars, trapping the occupants. One woman driver was actually flattened by the bulldozer. Eyewitness, Yaakov Ashkenazi apparently told the Associated Press news agency that “I saw the bulldozer smash [a] car with its shovel. He smashed the guy sitting in the driver’s seat.” Another witness voiced his opinion that the bulldozer assailant ” wanted to kill as many as he could.”

The bulldozer then went on to plough into a bus and persistently ram it until it was turned on its side, injuring dozens of passengers. Shortly after, a bank security guard was heard to say that he had shot and killed the driver, but when it restarted on a fresh rampage, it was apparent that he hadn’t. The bulldozer progressed slowly as several people leapt onto the bulldozer’ cab and attempted to stop the driver. It was only stopped when an irate pedestrian, one of the strugglers, who had wrenched a gun from a policeman’s grasp, shot the driver at point blank rage, followed seconds after by a policeman who also shot the Arab, before being thrown off the cab, himself.

The two had fortunately thwarted the mad rampage, minutes before it could have unleashed its murderous weight on the central market, potentially wreaking untold carnage.
