Libya 12th May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News] More than 100 people have been reported dead after a plane operated by Libyan airline Afriqiyah crash landed on route to London’s Gatwick Airport.  It appears the sole survivor is an 8 year old Dutch boy who was rushed to a hospital near Tripoli.

Afriqiyah Airways listed their 93 passengers and 11 Libyan crew members on its Airbus 330-200 flight 8U771 from Johannesburg and was nearly at the end of its 9 hour long flight. The passengers were of different nationalities including British.

There has not been any indication of the cause of the crash except that it exploded on landing and totally disintegrated. The crash site has been sealed off by security officials. The wreckage could be seen, but there was no evidence of smoke. The airbus was one of three owned by the airline.

A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said the plane had left Johannesburg the previous evening, but was later registered as missing.
