AFOS is Back in Thailand

PATTAYA - Spectators of motor racing in Thailand will look forward to an exciting weekend of highly charge and full gear racing when the Asian Festival Of Speed arrives in Bira, Pattaya on the 2nd & 3rd day of September.

Preparations were set up with the Press Conference and Street Demonstration.

Members of the media were given the priority to cover AFOS the press briefing, which was attended by Mr David Sonenscher CEO of Motorsport Asia and Matthijs Hoitink of Formula BMW Asia.

There were representatives from two participating teams in AFOS, Franz Engstler & Andreas Klinge of Engstler Motorsport who are both competing in the Asian Touring Car Championship and Thailand‘s own young talent, the Formula BMW Asia driver, James Grunwell of Team Meritus.

Event organizers, Motorsport Asia are pleased to once again make Bira International Circuit a part of the AFOS calendar. Every year, since its first appearance at the circuit after 1997, the Asian Festival Of Speed finally back to Thailand behind the expectancy of this biggest event in motor sport.

In his speech, Mr Sonenscher said “This is a significant event which marks the return of the highest level of Asian racing to Thailand. This year, we will once again see the alliance of different racing teams into amazing actions.

Members of the media and guests were treated to a video presentation of AFOS events held at various circuits around Asia. They were able to witness the forthcoming excitement that will sparkle upon the arrival of the Asian Festival Of Speed through a street demonstration done by two A TCC and two FBMWA machines.

Engstler Motorsport drivers, Franz Engstler and Andreas Klinge drove their competition BMW‘s while home hero, James Grunwell along with FBMW mate Daniel Ricciardo took the formula cars on the public roads.

The circuit is well known to have areas for exhibition thereby stimulates audiences for exciting and amazing race The reverse grid for Race 2 will make things even more exciting as the frontrunners will have to begin their second race from the middle of the pack.

Within the Formula BMW Asia series, Thai motorsport fans will be able to support local driver James Grunwell, who grew up in Thailand and is a Thai at heart. He will be keen to put on a good show for his home circuit.

Despite having six podium finishes, Grunwell is still aiming for the victory. Currently 3rd in the Driver‘s Championship Points standing, Grunwell will have to challenge Championship Points leader, Australian Sam Abay and New Zealand driver Earl Bamber.

Abay and Bamber have both recorded dominant weekends in previous events and they will not want to play second fiddle to anyone, not even the local hero. So, although Grunwell has the advantage of racing at his home circuit, winning may not be that easy.

The Asian Festival Of Speed will be held at Bira International Circuit in Pattaya, Thailand starting from 2-3 September 2006. Qualifying for Round 7 of ATCC will be held on Friday, 1st September. The first race for A TCC and FBMW will be held on Saturday, 2nd September while the second and third races for both series will be held on Sunday, 3rd September.

The demonstration started from the Mantra Restaurant at Amari Hotel and the cars were driven to the entrance of the Royal Garden Plaza shopping centre, down to the Beach Road, where the drivers signed autographs for the racing fans. The AFOS “Babes” also made an appearance and distributed some leaflets.

Spectators of the AFOS will be able to witness the close fight between the top four Division 1 drivers in the Asian Touring Car Championship.
