Acclaimed Producer ‘Spector’ Appeals Murder Conviction

Lawyers, acting on behalf of convicted murder and pop music producer Phil Spector have appealed the 2009 court ruling which sentenced him to 19 years to life in prison. The appeals process was commenced earlier this week based on an alleged improper judicial testimony and various other inaccuracies in Spector’s trial.

US, the 13th of March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The appeal, filed by Spector’s San-Francisco based lawyers, Riordan & Horgan, states that the magistrate, Larry Fidler, made errors with jury instructions, wrongly changed several rulings and admitted wrongly allowed evidence to be submitted. Importantly, leading defence lawyer Dennis Riordan also stated that the magistrate had offered his own testimony in Spector’s trial, which is considered a gross violation of Californian state law. “Reversal of (Spector’s) conviction is required on the basis of improper judicial testimony alone,” noted one of Spector’s defence lawyers.

Currently, Phil Spector [70] is serving 19 years to life in prison based on his sentencing for the February 2003 murder of B-Grade actress Lana Clarkson. The case has gained worldwide publicity due to Spector’s involvement within the music industry. Along with The Beatles, Spector has also produced pop and rock music tracks for icons such as; The Ronettes, Cher and Leonard Cohen.

In brief, it is alleged that Spector met Clarkson at the famed, House of Blues nightclub on Sunset Strip, California. Going back to his house the actress was then shot and killed by a single bullet wound to the mouth.

Spector’s defence stated that the actress committed suicide in depression over her perceived failure of an acting career. Prosecutors, however; allege that Spector had murdered Clarkson in a fit of violent rage.

Spector’s original trial ended in a deadlocked jury, but in a second trial, amidst significant controversy, Spector was convicted and sentenced for murder.
