Abhisit Appears as Final Witness in Democrat Dissolution Case

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday appeared at the Constitutional Court as the final defence witness in a case of misappropriation of funds by the ruling Democrat Party. If found guilty, Thailand oldest political party faces dissolution and over 40 politicians involved in the affair face five-year bans from politics.

Bangkok, the 18th of October 2010: The Constitutional Court is in the process of hearing witness statement relating to the case of a misappropriation of some Bt29 million in funds allocated by the Election Commission Political Party Development Fund in 2004-2005.

If the court rules in line with an earlier Election Commission resolution to dissolve the party, over 40 Democrat executives including Mr. Abhisit himself, will been banned from politics for a period of five years in accordance with the Thai Constitution.

The Democrat Party has also been accused of violating the Constitution by receiving a Bt258-million donation–an amount which exceeds the legal limit, from TPI Polene, one of the country’s leading cement manufacturers.

In a related matter, Constitutional Court President Chat Chonlaworn on Monday dismissed his secretary; Pasit Sakdanarong after a video was released to the media by the opposition Puea Thai Part featuring Mr. Sakdanarong allegedly colluding with a Democrat MP involved with the case.

The opposition party, along with releasing the video footage on Sunday, accused the duo of jointly attempting to lobby the court over the ongoing case, with the Constitutional Court since having setup a committee to investigate the case and relating allegations.

Constitutional Court Judge, Udomsak Nitimontri, assured the media of the court impartiality in the case and stood firm that no one could interfere with their work.

Hitting back at the opposition, Minister Attached to the Prime Ministers Office, Satit Wongnongtoey, said the release of the controversial video was a well-planned move by the Peau Thai Party, which was meant to put pressure on the courts decision in the case.

“I want every party to adhere to the law and facts. The dissolution of the Thai Rak Thai and People’s Power parties could not be compared to that of the Democrat Party. The Thai Rak Thai was dissolved on charge of election fraud, while the allegation against the Democrat Party was misuse of election funds,” said Mr Wongnongtoey.
