Director-General Anucha Mokhaves of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said the number of road accidents Friday was 85 less than the comparable period last year while the number of fatalities, 36, was nine less and the number of injured persons was 147 less.

He said the major reason attributed for the road accidents was driving under the influence of alcohol. Most accidents involved motorcycles.

The northernmost province of Chiang Rai recorded highest total number of accidents and injuries on Friday with 21 mishaps and 22 injured persons, he said.

As many people are still leaving Bangkok and heading for home in upcountry on Saturday, police checkpoints on main roads and highways are urged to carefully inspect pickup trucks and buses with too many passengers in a bid to reduce road accidents, he added. (TNA)
