Police investigator Lieutenant Colonel Polagrit Kumtien was notified at 4:20 am and a police and rescue team were dispatched to the pub on the Cowboy intersection, Moo 9, North Pattaya. In the car park in front of the Cottage Pub, police found an injured man, Mr. Peerawat Tungprakob Jarern [33], from Chuntaburi, lying on the ground. He had been shot in his left waist and right leg and was in a serious condition. He was immediately taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Another man, identified as Mr. Kanchanok Sartprapun, [23], residing at 109/29 Moo. 11, Thachang, Chuntaburi, had been shot dead and was lying in a pool of blood. He had been shot in the back of the head and his body was covered with wounds and his face was swollen. A .45 mm bullet casing and a broken whiskey bottle were found on the ground next to the body. Police kept them as evidence.

Witnesses told police that the injured man and the dead man were sitting in the pub with another friend. They had a conflict with another group of 5-6 men at the next table and ended up fighting in the pub and both challenged each other to a fight outside the pub.

The first group [with three men] then rushed to get a gun and fired several shots into the air. One of the members of the other group also pulled out a gun and fired at the first group. Witnesses said several shots were fired and the scene resembled a cowboy movie. Eventually, all that was to be seen was the injured and dead man on the ground. The other group had jumped into their car and sped away. Police patrols were notified but they failed to find the truck.

At 7.00 am on the same day, Mr. Manus Siriwong, [22] reported to Police Lieutenant Colonel Polagrit Kumtien at the police station saying that the shooting was, in fact, a mistake. He explained to police his account of the events that night.

He and his friends were in the pub where he met his ex-girlfriend and talked to her like an old friend while a group of 6 men was drinking at the next table. One of the men approached his ex-girlfriend and asked for her phone number. She refused and said she already had a boyfriend. The group of 6 men was not happy to hear that and took a dislike to him. They wanted a fight but the pub staff stopped them. The group then challenged him to go outside the pub but he didn’t go. Later, his friends told him that the men were outside in the car park in a bronze Mitsubishi Triton truck, waiting to attack him.

Not too long after that, another innocent group of men walked out of the pub to the car park. The two victims, Mr. Peerawat and Mr. Karnchanok, waited while their friends went to get the car. The gang of men waiting in the truck thought the two victims were Mr. Manus and his friend so three of them got out of the truck and fired their gun into the air. They then beat the two victims before shooting them.

Mr. Manus said the incident happened in front of many people and some of them might think the two groups were actually shooting each other, but the fact was the two victims were innocent. He said he felt really sorry for the victims and their relatives which is why he decided to report the truth and help the police arrest the gang and bring them to justice.

Later in the morning the relatives of the two victims came from Chunthaburi to meet the police. Mr. Karnchanok, the man who died, was a student at the Ratchapat Rumpaipunnee University.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Chalermsak Tien Thongsri confirmed that the shooting occurred following a fight over a woman in the pub and that they already had a group of suspects in custody known as the “HuayYai Gang”, some of whom denied any involvement in the attack. However, police would continue their investigations and bring the criminals to justice soon.
