Zvonareva, the world No. 5, prevailed after saving 8-of-9 break points, three more than her Slovenian opponent in a match that last one hour, 35 minutes.

The Russian’s victory setup a meeting with Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round. Shvedova, who only changed her nationality from Russian to Kazakhstani last year, enjoyed a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Austrian Tamira Paszek at the $220,000 hardcourt event.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark cruised through her opening match, forging a 6-3, 6-0 win over Chan Yung-jan.

The Taiwanese player struggled with her second serve and could only fend off four of the 10 break points she faced as Wozniacki set up a meeting with Russian Ksenia Pervak. Sybille Bammer, the No. 4 seed, was pushed to the brink by Urszula Radwanska before winning in three sets.

Bammer took the first set 6-3, but her Polish opponent bounced back to claim the next set, 6-4. However, the Austrian stepped up a gear to win the decisive set 6-1 in a contest that lasted two hours, five minutes.

India’s Sania Mirza escaped a near two-hour test with Nicha Lertpitaksinchai, earning a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win.

It was a gutsy effort from the Thai wild card as she saved 12-of-18 break points before eventually being outlasted by Mirza.

Croatian Ivana Lisjak came out on top in a battle of qualifiers as she overcame Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatantcheva for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Also on Tuesday, Ukrainian qualifier Yuliya Beygelzimer beat Russian Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-2 and Portugal’s Neuza Silva also advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over defeated Australian Jessica Moore.
