Pattaya, 28th March 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: Mr. Suriya Saengpong, the Director of Khao Kaew Open Zoo in Sriracha, Chonburi revealed that the zoo has taken up new measures to help keep the animals warm during this changing weather.  Some measures used included shinning spotlights into the animals’ shelters and covering the floor with hays and sacks.

For those animals that are well adapted to the room temperature such as crocodile, turtle, mara and tapir, zoo staffs still take good care of them.

They use spotlights to shine warmth into the performance zone and cover the floor with hays for those well-adapted animals. For other animals such as limber, Thai monkey, chimpanzee, hyena, orangutan, python and boa and other nocturnal animals, the zoo staffs cover their shelters with hays or sacks.

The zoo’s veterinarians are to check the animals’ health status on a daily basis.  Animals can be stressed easily when the weather changes. Their immune systems could be compromised, putting them at high risk of catching diseases.  Hence the zoo staffs monitor the animals closely.

When the veterinarians discovered that an animal is unwell, this animal would be isolated from other animals, in order to prevent the disease from spreading.
