SATTAHIP – January 23, 2013; at 8 a.m. a report of a man hanging himself under a tree was received by Pol. Sub. Lt. Noraphat Thongdee, investigation officer, Sattahip police station.

He went to inspect the scene with Pol. Col. Chonnaphat Nawalak, Superintendent, Sattahip police station; Pol. Lt. Col. Prakorb Saengpring, Deputy Superintendent; Pol. Lt. Col. Niphon Pomsanarm, Deputy Superintendent; Pol. Lt. Col. Thapanat Chayarnphat, Inspector; and the detective police team.

The incident occurred in the Tapioca field close to Huay Tu reservoir, Moo 9 Tambon Bang Sarey, Amphur Sattahip.

At the scene, police found the man’s body dangling from a nylon rope under a towering mango tree. A black sport shirt covered the victim’s face, and he was wearing a white-and-pink Polo shirt and light-colored plaid shorts.

Next to his dangling body was a blue Honda Click motorbike, whose seat had traces of mud apparently made by the victim’s feet. Police found documents in the motorbike showing that it had been rented on January 17, from the Tappraya Car Rental shop on Tappraya Road in Banglamung.

While inspecting the victim’s body, police didn’t find any wounds or traces to suggest the victim had been murdered. Inside his right shorts’ pocket, police found 1,300 THB cash and a mobile phone.

Police also found the victim’s identity card, which identified him as Mr. Paxmah Rakhman, age 25, nationality Russian. Police later discovered that the victim is the son of a millionaire real estate businessman.

Pol. Sub. Lt. Noraphat Thongdee noted that one unusual detail about the hanging was the victim’s head being covered by a shirt. However, a police investigation revealed that the young Russian victim had been suffering from dysthymia, a low-level depression that can last for years.

The victim had been treated in a private hospital several times for his dysthymia. Police suspect the young Russian may have been feeling depressed, so he committed suicide to escape from his disease.

His body was taken for an autopsy by the rescue officers of Sawangrojjanatharmmasatharn Sattahip foundation to find the exact cause of death.
