12th January 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 00.30 a.m. Police Major Somchai Chaikananugun, Pattaya, was notified by Mr.Nathaphong Viriyasuwan, Branch Manager of Carrefour Pattaya, that a suspected thief had been caught in the act.

When police arrived they were met by Mr.Nathaphong Viriyasuwan and Mr. Sunton Saengwa, a security guard, who had apprehended the suspect. It turned out that the thief was a young Thai lady, identified as Ms. Pailin Putapon, aged 19, residing at 149 Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Bangsue. The stolen items in her possession included 66 expensive foreign imported Chocolate Bars worth about 76,098 THB and 1 black handbag.

Mr. Sunton, the store security guard stated that he had seen Ms Pailin walking into the store carrying a very large black bag. After about 30 minutes of browsing around the store, he observed her ltrying to leave quickly, he also noticed that her bag was now suspiciously full. He therefore approached her and asked to check her bag, as he suspected it contained stolen items from the store. Ms.Pailin however refused and attempted to escape by running down the escalator. While trying to flee her bag ripped open due to the weight, spilling the heavy candy cache to the floor for all to see. While the security guard and staff helped to detain Ms. Pailin, the police were immediately notified.

Since she was caught in the act, Ms. Pailin had no real choice but to confess to the theft. She explained that she was stealing the chocolate bars in order to sell them to other stores so that she could buy milk for her 2 year old infant. Further investigation revealed that this was not the first time Ms. Pailin had been arrested for theft. She had recently been caught stealing Body Lotion and Toothbrushes from the Big C department store at Bangplee, Bangkok in November 2010, and was currently on probation for that offence. Ms. Pailin admitted that was why she had traveled on a public bus to Pattaya and tried her luck at stealing in a new location. She stated that she had no job and therefore no money to feed her 2 year old son and was looking to sell the stolen chocolate to earn money. The police will now proceed with the case according to the law.
