Acclaimed Writer Chris Moore Lectures Pattaya’s Expats

With many years as a writer and dozens of popular titles to his name, Bangkok author Christopher G. Moore was once more a welcome visitor to the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC). Since 1992 he has been writing a series of novels centered around a mythical American private eye, named Vincent Calvino, who lives in Bangkok.

Pattaya, the 29th March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Almost eighteen years ago the first novel in this Vincent Calvino series was titled “Spirit House” and his latest literary work in this series is titled “The Corruptionist.” This is set around the intrigue of recent street demonstrations in Bangkok plus the occupation of Government House, and with such a title it delves heavily into corruption within the Kingdom.

As a former lawyer in America, author Christopher Moore is well qualified to give an opinion on a subject that has no rules, boundaries or limits to the amount of human greed that we see. Those involved become wealthier and bolder, eventually believing that it is their duty to give and take bribes in the interests of furthering their already considerable wealth. The poor are simply trying to improve their position, but with the wealthy it is just excessive greed.

Google search “corruption Thailand,” and you will discover 3.7 million hits, so the chain of predators seems to be well entrenched, with Thailand rating around No.7, Somalia rated as the worst and New Zealand rated as the least corrupt. Deep rooted corruption by-passes any immunity systems and “Transparency International” does the best it can to combat world-wide corruption. One suggestion during “question & answer” time was to have teachers explain the evils of corruption to our children. After the meeting this very likeable writer sat with his pretty Thai wife, and signed individual editions of his books, for those who purchased them.
