World Muslim Body Praises Thai Approach to Solve Violence

BANGKOK, May 18 - The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) affirmed that the continuing insurgence in southern Thailand had not stemmed from a religious conflict, but that the problem resulted from political, economic rights and culture, Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram said Friday.

Making the statement after attending the 34th Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) in Islamabad, Pakistan May 15–17, the foreign minister said the OIC issued a joint declaration praising the interim Thai government’s reconciliatory approach to solving the ongoing violence in the kingdom’s Muslim-majority southern region.

The declaration also called for the end of violence against innocent people in order to allow the local participation to live in peace and harmony with different religious faiths and within common heritage.

According to Mr. Nitya, the resolution affirmed that OIC members had a positive perspective regarding Thailand’s attempt to halt the violence.

The powerful Muslim organisation expressed confidence that the Thai government will resolve the problem through peaceful means with local participation.

Mr. Nitya said that the 57-member OIC refrained from issuing a special resolution on the situation affecting Muslim people in Thailand, as they had done with some other countries, because they had gained a better understanding of the situation from the Thai government’s clarification.

The ICFM is a regular annual session to review the work of the world’s largest Muslim organisation and its subsidiary and affiliated institutions.
