Pattaya, 2 May 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: After reporters are informed of a power failure at Wong-Amat beach, they hurry to the scene to record the situation.

Residents complain that the quality of Pattaya public walkway along Wong-Amat beach has become unsatisfactory for both Thai and foreigners to use.

The electricity at the beach has failed for a long time, which means there are no street lights and no CCTV surveillance cameras operated in the area, a local informs the reporter.

According to the resident, the beach areas are unsafe for local or tourist to conduct their daily activities such as to exercise and strolling, especially when it gets dark.

A portion of the concrete and bricked footpath has been significantly crumbled, creating a sidewalk hazard for the residents.

Instead villagers are obliged to walk on the sand for one kilometre, which is the length of the damaged 2-metered-wide footpath, a resident reports.

The local also adds that walking on the sand is impractical because the rocky and dirty beach is two meters lower than the pavement, making it extremely difficult to walk on.

Ten years ago, Wong-Amat beach was very popular among tourists who enjoyed a scenic walk or jog in the evening, Jira Pinyoying, 47, a shop-owner of the area comments.

But now there are hardly any tourists around, particularly in the evening when the area has no street lights, Jira continues.

He adds that the power failure has been an ongoing issue for a long time, but the council has not dealt with it.

A 73-year-old Austrian, Schmeitz Daul, who has been visiting Pattaya sporadically for the last 10 years, is also disappointed with the destruction of Wong-Amat beach.

According to Schmeitz, the area used to be one of his favourite beaches where he had his own privacy to enjoy a walk or jog on the wide pavement.

However, the pathway is not suitable for running and exercises anymore, Schemeitz states.

Wong-Amat beach is not the same as it was ten years ago. The concrete sideway has crumbled. The street lights are defective. The beach itself is unclean and rocky.

The local council or authorities are to take actions immediately before tourists and locals flee from Wong-Amat beach permanently.
