Wildfires ravage California

Another summer of wildfires worries many Californians. In California, a 40,000-acre wildfire is blazing across the desert wilderness after destroying 100 homes and buildings. The fire is threatening to merge with a 7,000-acre wildfire some five miles away. The smoke from the fires has been reported as far away as Las Vegas, Utah and Ogden.

Fire officials fear that the two fires could join together on the desert floor, and turn into an even bigger problem. They are also worried that the fire may spread into the mountains were millions of dead trees could fuel the fire to an unimaginable size.

The larger fire was ignited by lightning last weekend, and turned into a huge destructive blaze by Tuesday. All of the dead trees in the surrounding forests are not helping matters. Thousands of acres of dead trees have already been remove by workers, but experts say that it will take at least 20 years to remove all the dead wood.

More than 1300 firefighters have been battling the blaze with the aid of bulldozers, air tankers, and helicopters. Nine firefighters and two civilians have been treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had declared a state of emergency in San Bernardino County to better help the affected people.
