Pattaya, the 10th of July 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 2:30pm, under the leadership of Colonel Natthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) officers setup three vehicle checkpoints along Sukhumvit Road. The checkpoints, located at south, central and north Pattaya were arranged to search weekend travellers for illegal items and modified vehicles.

Saturdays search was part of an ongoing proactive initiative to rid Pattaya of problematic youth gangs and the drugs and violence that inherently stem from the organised networks.

As a result of investigations, officers successfully arrested Mr. Narathip Maprang-on [32] and Mr. Bunshoo Bunjit [28] at the South Pattaya checkpoint. The two men were found in possession of a concealed weapon. The firearm, a .38 calibre revolver, was hidden under the gear boot of the silver Toyota Vigo pickup they had been driving. Police stopped the pair after observing the pickup, without a registration plate, approaching the checkpoint.

Under interrogation, Mr. Maprang-on admitted to having purchased the weapon for an amount of Bt20,000 from a friend. He stated that he merely carried the firearm for personal protection against local gangs. He explained that he had been out drinking with Mr. Bunjit at the local Sea Bar Pub in South Pattaya and was returning home when stopped by police.

The two men were subsequently arrested by police an charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and carrying a firearm in public without authorisation.

Also apprehended as a result of the Sukhumvit checkpoints were approximately 20 youths, suspected of being part of a youth gang, under the influence of illegal narcotics. Various modified motorbikes were also confiscated during the course of the night.
