Pattaya, the 22nd of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 3:45am on Friday, police Lieutenant Colonel Phattasar Detphakkul (Pattaya Police Investigator) received a report stating that a foreign man has been found dead in room 505 of the Royal Palace Hotel, 2nd Road, South Pattaya. A team of investigators along with Sawang Boriboon medical personnel proceeded to the scene to investigate further.

Police arrived at the scene to find the deceased body of Mr. Mikhail Pokrashenko [45] a Russian national lying naked, face up, on the bed. Around the mans throat was a relatively tight length of string or necklace that had evidence of blood on it and had left slight bruising around his neck. Significantly, Mr. Pokrashenko was still wearing a “Montblanc” watch valued at close to 200,000 baht, a diamond ring, a gold diamond encrusted necklace and wrist band, both of approximately 10 baht in weight each. Further to the valuable jewellery that was on his body there was an amount of nearly 15,000 US dollars placed on the bedside table.

Investigation revealed no signs of a struggle or search of the room and apart from the marks on the mans neck there appeared to be no sign of a fight. Medical officers confirmed that Mr. Pokrashenko was suffering from a urinary tract infection and had seminal fluids present on his penis at the time of death, suggesting that he may have been having sexual intercourse at or around the time of death. Mr. Pokrashenko’s body has now been sent for autopsy in order to determine the actual cause of death.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Detphakkul stated that Mr. Pokrashenko had two security guards – Mr. Igor Voronin [43] and Mr. Vadim Khomenko [40] – travelling with him in Pattaya but as yet it is unknown what they were doing at the time of his death. At present police are reluctant to rule out the possibility of murder due to the markings on Mr. Pokrashenko’s neck, however; police believe it is highly unusual that a murderer would not have taken all of the valuables or money from the room. Officers now eagerly await the return of the autopsy report; in the meantime police will now interrogate the two Russian security guards responsible for Mr. Pokrashenko’s protection and inform the Russian embassy of the incident.
