We Serve the Readers, Not the Sources!

There are three ways that we have gathered information for our stories, research, observation and interviewing. Of these, interviewing is clearly the most important. It can be done in person, over the phone, and now even by e-mail. It can be extensive or just a few questions. In whatever form, it is the key to the stories we write.

Dear Readers,

Many thanks for reading our news and remaining loyal, as you can see our comment box now allows us to exchange our ideas and creative communications, but, sometimes, the items are too sensitive to allow a full discussion. You’ll have to bear with us on that one, press limitations and all that.

First of all, to those who always complain about our standard of English, thank you for your concern, but you’ll just have to wait until our Thai team improves their English. But, we also maintain that good information, even poorly written, is better than soufflé writing, or writing with no substance, we think you’ll agree. And we are trying.

Thank you for your advice about hiring some farang to translate. Are there any farang who can really read and understand Thai completely and they willing to accept the Thai wage rate? Recommend us one or two, we’ll employ them tomorrow!

We know that the best reporters should be bright, persistent, honest, personable, curious and courageous. Every one of us has tried our best to live up to these principles. We are not asking you to believe us, but stay with us and see for yourselves. Everyday, we have to be able to deal with a variety of topics and talk with numerous people. We see the unusual, the ironic and the mundane. We think through all the possibilities and organize a large amount of information to find the important parts.

We have to be quick. Once we are assigned a story, we go after it. We make the calls and keep on trying if we don’t make contact.

We do mobilise ourselves and knock on doors. We don’t just sit around and wait for something to happen or for someone to write about something then copy, paste and criticize. That is not what we’re about.

We are curious, but we are nearly always pleasant. We convey to those we meet that we are tolerant of them and their ideas, even though we may not like them or what they stand for. We subordinate our egos and are good listeners.

We think we are honest enough. We seek the truth and act independently. We do what we say we’re going to do and don’t do something we promised to avoid. We return your calls, and we’re willing to say no.

We’re obsessed with accuracy and triple-check our facts with numerous call-backs. But even then it’s not always possible to get the whole truth. We try and see both sides of every issue. We don’t treat people as a means to an end, but try and give respect where it’s due.

We are dependent on a press bureau, which shares its news with the media throughout Thailand. However, the news is first given in Thai and then translated. Sometimes, we get names wrong, especially, deepest apologies to all those whose names we’ve spelt incorrectly. As I say, we’re trying our best and we believe we can hold our heads up high and accept all criticism, where it’s due, humbly.

We also believe we’re doing one of the best jobs, certainly here in Pattaya and we do try not to make the news too sensational. However, noble and loyal readers, do continue to give us your feedback, with your help, we can only improve.
