Vietnamese Male Slashes People’s Waterproof Bags, Stealing Mobile Phones during Songkran

A Vietnamese male was arrested by Toongmahamek Police after slashing his victims waterproof bag and stole a mobile phone. The defendant refused all the allegations.

BANGKOK – April 16, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; The Police of Toongmahamek Police Station, arrested Mr. Lee Dok Ho, a Vietnamese National, 57 years of age, for alleged cutting the waterproof bag containing a mobile phone belonging to Ms. Aroonporn Dechkajornsap, 25 years of age, who is an employee of a Private Company. The incident happened in the vicinity of the entrance way to the BTS Skytrain, Saladaeng Station and tried to steal her Samsung, Galaxy S-plus, mobile phone.

Ms. Aroonporn stated that before the incident occurred, her friend and herself were walking back to her home along the way of Dusit Thani Hotel, there were a lot of people in the area and it was crowded. She discovered that the thief had used a knife to cut the mobile phone bag and tried to steal the mobile phone. She restrained the male and asked the Security Guard to search the suspect, for her mobile phone, but it could not be located on his person. A BTS Skytrain Officer found the mobile phone on the ground, but the defendant still refused to admit that he had attempted to steal the mobile phone and he stated that he didn’t do anything. The arresting Police Officer, charged the male with stealing other’s property at night.

The defendant had entered Thailand 2 days previous and he did not have a criminal record in Thailand. Toongmahamek Police Station, discovered that they had received 141 reports of victims being relieved of their mobile phones and possessions during the Songkran Festival, all the 141 cases had the same method of operation as used by the suspect Mr. Lee Dok Ho. Most of the mobile phones that were stolen were i-phone and Blackberry models.
