PATTAYA – March 30, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 12.30 a.m., a report of a thief being caught stealing money from the donation box in a temple was received by the radio center of Pattaya police station. The incident occurred at Chaimongkhol temple at south Pattaya road, Moo 10 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

Waiting for police at the scene was Mr. Preecha Sa-nga-nate, or Uncle Toom, age 50, the spiritual guide of Chaimongkhol temple. Mr. Preecha and the team of security guards of the temple had closed the door of the temple to restrain the troublemaker inside the temple.

The police detained the juvenile troublemaker, “Joey” (alias), age 14, who was caught taking money from 2 donation boxes placed near the window beside the Buddha image.

The police seized the evidence of stolen coins and banknotes totaling 2,000-3,000 THB, which were contained in a plastic bag. The boy Joey confessed that it was the first time he stole from the temple. He had been persuaded by 2 friends to steal money from the donation boxes in the temple.

The reason he agreed to steal the money was because he was crazy about playing online games online, and he wanted to play the games but he had no money. So he decided to make trouble together, and his 2 friends were watching outside the temple while he went into the temple to make trouble and stole money until he was arrested finally.

Mr. Preecha the spiritual guide revealed that in March there were three other similar incidents of theft. In the first and second incidents, the thief had levered the window of temple to steal the money in donation box. For the third time, the thief had levered the door of temple until it got damaged.

The thieves had been following a pattern of making trouble at night every 4-5 days. So this time Mr. Preecha and the team of security guards staked out many points in the temple, and used the chain to put around the door when the thief entered to make trouble.

Mr. Preecha believes that the 2 people the boy Joey claimed had talked him into stealing might be 2 adults in the same group of a gang of thieves that had previously broken into the temple to steal money.
