Vaccinations Advisory for South Africa Bound Football Fans

The Thai Public Health Ministry on Saturday issued a warning, to all Thai citizens planning on a trip to South Africa for the impending World Cup, to take precautionary measures by getting vaccinated against various prominent African diseases.

Bangkok, the 5th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Football fans scheduled to leave for this years World Cup in South Africa have been advised to get vaccinated against both yellow fever and influenza before going.

Director-General of the Disease Control Department Dr. Manit Teeratantikanont stated that any Thai’s planning on visiting 32 countries in Africa are strong advised to get yellow fever vaccination as well as an influenza shot.

Stripped mosquitoes, carriers of the yellow fever, are prevalent in most African nations. Despite South Africa being relatively safe the Thai Health Ministry still advises travelers to take the necessary precautions when travelling, particularly if you plan visits to other African nations following the completion of the World Cup.

Yellow fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease; its symptoms may include fever, bleeding nose and mouth, headache, chills, back pain, nausea and loss of appetite. Over 15% of cases develop liver damage which leads to jaundice and potentially death.

The FIFA World Cup 2010 is due to kickoff on Friday the 11th of June and run until the 11th of July.
