Formula One, the 24th of March, 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Following the failure of the USF1 team to take its place on the grid for the 2010 championships, the sports governing body the FIA has begun the process for accepting expressions of interest from potential new entrants for 2011.

An unnamed source from within the FIA was quoted as stating; “the overall long-term interests of the championship will determine which candidates are selected.” Interested parties have been given a deadline of the 15th of April to apply, accompanied by and administration fee of approximately Bt44,000. The formal application process will then be commenced with any viable interested parties.

All applicants will then undergo a thorough examination by the FIA, and be required to prove their suitability to compete in the sport in four key areas:

– The technical ability and resources of the team.

– The ability to raise and maintain sufficient funding to allow participation.

– The team’s experience and human resources.

– The FIA’s individual assessment as to the value the potential candidate may bring to the championships.

Following the complete demise of the USF1 team’s ability to field a team in this year championship and the Hispania Racing outfits financial difficulties – which eventuated in them only competing in their first practice session on the Friday before the opening Bahrain Grand Prix – the FIA are determined to avoid further issues in the future.

All formal applications are to be completed before the end of June with an announcement on the decision to be released in late July 2010. Along with the acceptance of a new team for the 2011 championships the FIA are also looking at having a standby team available for any unexpected departures at the end of the season.

At present, speculation that the already formed Stefan GP team is the front runner in the process has intensified. Stefan GP had hoped to fill the slot vacated by USF1 at the start of this season. David Richard’s Prodrive organisation has also been rumoured to be considering a bid.
