Mr Banda, a potato farmer, put 13-month-old David in the orphanage where Madonna later found him after his wife Marita died from childbirth complications and he felt he ‘could not cope’ as a single parent and also work the fields.

The real reason behind his father’s choice to abandon David – as revealed America’s Today Show – shed an intriguing new light on the singer’s controversial adoption saga.

The revelation emerged after the singer admitted in an interview that she had been ‘confused’ as to why Yohane refused to take money from the singer so that he could bring the boy up himself in Malawi.

On the show, Madonna said she spoke to Mr Banda in court with the aid of a translator, offering him money to help him raise David in his village.

When she met him, she said she would be happy to facilitate to bring the boy back to his village and help him financially raise the boy.

In her first British interview about the controversial adoption of David Banda , Madonna will say that Yohane Banda refused her offer of money and instead gave her permission to adopt his child.

“And he said no. And there was a lot of translation situations – and I couldn’t really understand that decision”,‘ the singer said.

Madonna also denied claims that the boy received regular visits from his family, in contrast to the father who says he used to cycle miles to the orphanage to visit his son regularly.

“I never met a granny and I was told … that from the day that he was left in the orphanage he was not visited by any extended family members and that’s really why I became interested in him,” she said in extracts of the interview that have been released early.

“If someone had said to me: ‘His dad comes every week or his granny visits on a regular basis and he’s well looked after’, I would not even have given it another thought.”
