CHONBURI – February 22, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 12.30 p.m. a report of a multiple vehicle collision involving an oil tanker truck was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Anan Klomthooksing, Deputy Superintendent and head investigation officer, Khao Kheaw Highway police station, Sriracha. The accident occurred on the road route 7 part 2, on the bridge of Mae Kimbuay intersection at the entrance side to Chonburi.

At the scene, police found many cars had collided and were severely damaged. Some cars could not be moved, causing a big traffic jam extending back more than 10 km. No one was injured in the pileup. The highway police had to rush to clear the traffic to let the backed-up cars pass through.

The truck that caused the pileup was a Heno fuel oil truck that suffered damage to its front end. Police questioned the driver, Mr. Thongchai Sophonsirikul, age 35, an employee of Chokvaraporn Transport Co., Ltd.

Mr. Thongchai said he was on his way to pick up fuel oil from the oil refinery at Amphur Sriracha to deliver to Arng Thong province. But as he approached the traffic slowdown, the brakes on his truck suddenly failed. He could not stop his truck, which rammed into the cars ahead of him. The momentum of his truck caused 16 cars to smash into each other in a domino-like effect.

The first vehicle hit by the tanker truck was a white Toyota Hilux pickup truck, driven by Mr. Wisan Raekrasin. He told police that he was driving from Sriracha to play golf. But the traffic jam forced him to slow down and drive very slowly. Suddenly the tanker truck rammed into his pickup, and pushed it forward to collide with the other vehicles, until a total of 16 cars were damaged. Fortunately, no one got injured or died, he said.

Other vehicles severely damaged included a Mitsubishi pickup truck, a Chevrolet pickup truck, an Isuzu pickup truck, a Honda CRV, a Honda Jazz, and two Toyota automobiles. The rest of the vehicles suffered lesser damage and were removed from the scene.
