A survey of high school students carried out by several children’s organizations, found that 44% of Thai male students felt it was appropriate to have sexual relations with their partners, and 32% felt that Valentine’s Day presents a good chance to express that love. As a result, many relevant organizations are campaigning to the school-goers, that they should not be expressing themselves sexually at that age.

The “Youth Network for Preventing New Drinkers” combined with the “Friends of Youth for Development Foundation”, “Thai Womens Progressive Movement Foundation”, “Office of Organization Network to Stop Drinking”, “Training Center for Children and Youth (male), Ban Karnjanaphisek and Thai Health Promotion Foundation” have set up a campaign directed at students for Valentine’s Day, entitled “Don’t have SEX to prove your love”. Volunteers were polling children at Chai Samorraphun Monument, and were speaking about the findings of the survey.

Mr. Theeraphak Khahawong, the coordinator of the “Youth Network for Preventing New Drinkers”, revealed that many organizations had joined together, with the goal of finding out the attitude of over 1,300 Bangkok male students, polled during February 6th to 10th, 2014, regarding their opinions on the subject. The results are as follows:
44% think that having sex with girlfriends is common behavior.
31.76% think that it is a good chance to express their love by having sex on Valentine’s Day.

The activities that they will do on Valentine’s Day:
27.33%: Make a date to see their loved one.
24.61%: Will buy chocolates or roses as a gift for their girlfriend.
18.23%: Go to the temple for the light waving ceremony of Macha Bucha Day.
15.76%: Confess their love to their girlfriends.

According to the poll, men have a habit of using certain phrases in order to have sex with their girlfriends:
20.69%: “You don’t really love me.”
20.53%: “Don’t be afraid, I know how to prevent infections and pregnancy.”
17.69%: “It’s only the one time, nobody needs to know.”
14.61%: “You’re my first girlfriend.”
10.23%: “I’m afraid that you will change.”

33.15% of the men polled felt that it was the duty of the female to concern herself with prevention methods for STD’s and pregnancy.
34.07% said that they had never been taught sexual education by their family, nor by their school.

As a result, the idea of this campaign is to supply more knowledge to the students, with the hope of preventing unwanted pregnancies, and to be more responsible. It is hoped that more parents will get involved in the teaching of such a fundamental issue, and that secondary schools will also help to reinforce the subject.

Doctor Sophon Mekthon, the Director General of the Department for Infectious Disease Control, has information to suggest that children as young as 12 years old are having sexual relationships.

His findings also go on to show that between 18-28% of male children aged in Matthayomsuksa 5 are having sexual relations. The girl’s percentage for the same age is between 5-16%. Apparently 51% of men, and 69% of women use a condom when having sex for the first time.

Furthermore, according to the survey findings of the National Statistical Office for 2013, it was found that there was an increasing number of teenage mothers (18 or below). The stat suggests a ratio of 54:100,000. This is in conflict with the findings of the World Health Organization (WHO), whose figures suggest 15:100,000.
