Unbelievable Emergency Calls That Could Cost Lives

A Police force spokesperson in the UK stated that everyday their communications staff can answer up to 1,000 emergency calls from the public. The operators try to connect with emergency calls within ten seconds, but quite often they are faced with calls that are not quite the emergency they expected.

Instead of emergency calls, call operators have had to deal with such calls as drains giving off bad smells and hotel rooms that have been unsatisfactory. Calls made between November 2009 and January 2010, have been released to the public in a bid to remind them what a real emergency is.

In an emergency call made to police, one woman dialed 999 when she became distressed over the loss of her slippers. Operators answered another call stating that an unexpected delivery was in progress…..it was a gerbil that had gone into labour. A man called when the delivery of his take away meal was late, while a woman called in a panic when she woke up with her duvet wrapped around her head.

In the US a 25 year old man called 911 because he misplaced his spectacles while a 13 year old boy called then hung up because his brother had taken his toy from him. One operator took a call from an 18 year old asking for the non emergency number.

Then came the tragic one when a 21 year old student who was killed in an off campus apartment. The operator asked several times if it was an emergency and after getting no response, hung up. It is standard procedure to call back or send help, but the caller went on to the next call, which was another hang up call. This time the operator called back to find it was not an emergency, but still did not call back the young student who was actually dying. The call center handled 114 hang up calls that day which on average is 42,000 calls a year. The 21 year old student was also a hang up call, but she was in fact dying.
