UK PM May Fly Into Storm over Xmas Thai Jaunt

UK PM David Cameron faces criticism on two fronts over his proposed Phuket holiday: splurging when the UK is expected to adopt austerity measures and going to a country whose “government there murdered protesters,” according to Britain’s Daily Mirror.

Pattaya, Oct31, 2010. Campaigners acting as Red Shirt mouthpieces are denouncing UK Premier David Cameron’s proposed winter holiday to Thailand. A UDD (United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship) report, submitted to the International Criminal Court alleging human rights abuses, severe media restrictions, including closing down offending websites, and causing the illegal deaths of 89+ Red Shirt demonstrators, is being used to fuel the fire of domestic UK protest about their PM’s proposed Thai trip.

On his parliamentary three-week Christmas break, David Cameron and family are booked to seek the Thai sun in upmarket Phuket. Some sources claim that Cameron’s Thai host will be fellow Oxford-Etonian, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva; on this, Cameron’s political allies remain non-committal.

“Cameron will be flying off to a paradise hotspot just as the impact of his spending cuts starts to bite here,” the Mirror complained. If the Camerons do indeed decide on Phuket, they are likely to stay at the ultra-posh Amanpuri, described as a “gracious retreat set apart from the outside world”, with 40 ocean pavilions and 30 villas set in an exclusive tropical island getaway, winner of the Best Spa Worldwide award and deemed the 2nd Best Resort in SE Asia. No doubt the Camerons will require one of their lavish 6-Bedroom Ocean Villas, they will have to entertain, after all! Had the prime advocate of “Do what I say not what I do” gone before today, that little package would have cost the PM a mere US$ 5,800 a night. Sadly, however, his paradisiacal getaway will now cost US$ 8,200 nightly because High Season starts today! That’s a cool £5,112.86. Some austerity,eh! Still, at least they can enjoy the nightlife close by, as a local ad recommends, they don’t have to adopt hang-dog looks just because Britain’s starving.

Course, it might just be that the Camerons are following in the footsteps of other famous folk who ‘just love the Amanpuri, Phuket’, like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. The Amanpuri is also not adverse to hosting celebrity assignations, apparently. Carla Bruni, First Lady of France, reportedly had close contact of the third kind with Sir Mick Jagger there, a day after Jerry Hall gave birth to his daughter in 1992. Let’s say it’s a destination for second-wedding couples rather than firsts.

There again it could be the equally exclusive Andara that they end up in. After all retiring British ambassador Quinton Quayle is currently staying and what’s sauce for the goose ….. Just a tip, in case anyone wants to go and subject Cameron to some hard talk.
