U-Tapao Celebrates 21st Anniversary & Upgrade Plan

U-Tapao Airport, near Pattaya, recently celebrated its 21st anniversary in an official ceremony at which further funding for the airports redevelopment was announced. U-Tapao has been seen as a key strategic piece in Thailand’s commercial airport route and is considered a runoff to Bangkok’s major Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Sattahip, the 8th of March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: On Monday, Navy General Sorncha Sornprathum (U-Tapao International Airport Director and Rayong Aviation Division Commissioner) along with Navy General Suraphon Aisanon (U-Tapao International Airport Deputy Director) and the rest of the Airports board organised a merit ceremony involving Navy Officers and honorary guests from public and private enterprises. Buddhist monks were invited to perform a traditional ceremony to mark the occasion which was followed by a light meal in the airports main arrival terminal.

Navy Lieutenant Supphakorn Booranadilok (U-Tapao International Airport Deputy Director Board Chairman and Battle Fleet Commissioner) along with Senior Navy Captains from Sattahip joined in the ceremony urging the airports employees to continue to work together in a renewed effort to resolve issues and support the redevelopment and increasing tourism flow that U-Tapao will see during the 2010 high season.

Navy General Sornprathum revealed that U-Tapao had successfully gained further government funding for its redevelopment under a national initiative titled “Strength Thai 2012.” The redevelopment plan is entering phase two of the scheme and has received approximately 976 million baht in additional funding. The money has been allocated into upgrading U-Tapao’s ability to handle addition visitors both from international and domestic flights and to further enhance the airports effectiveness in acting as a relief for Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok.

Previously, U-Tapao has been used widely as a relief airport in times of political crisis and uncertainty in the capital and as such has gained worldwide recognition and merit for is safety conscious service. Redevelopment is expected to enhance this already strong reputation, at the same time upgrading the airports ability to handle a high passenger flow being used more efficiently and effectively in the future.
