U-Tapao Airport to Be the Hub Of The EastU-Tapao airport is to be renovated to become the 3rd biggest airport behind Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports so it can be the main hub of Eastern Thailand.
PATTAYA – July 17,2015 [PattayaDailyNews]; VADM.Wasinsap Chantawarin- director of U-Tapao airport- reported on the progress of the renovations of the airport to be transformed into a bigger commercial airport and to be the main hub of eastern Thailand.
The airport will be expanded so it can support 62,000 flights a year and 870,000 passengers. At the moment it handles only 10,000 flights a year and 100,000 passengers a year.
The main airports in Thailand are Suvannabhumi airport and Do Muang airport handle around 120 million passengers a year (80 million for Suvannabhuni airport and 40 million passengers for Don Muang airport). As a result, the officials intended to develop U-Tapao airport to be the 3rd largest commercial airport due to its location.
VADM.Wasinsap added that they will also focus on the transportation of passengers to and from the airport by improving the motorways and rail links, also a new high speed ferry will be able to transfer passengers from Sattahip-Huahin.
