Typhoon Wutip , Bao No 10 Nearing Peak Intensity

Typhoon Wutip looks to be nearing the peak of the storms intensity Sunday night before it starts to encounter friction caused by the coastlines of Hainan and Vietnam. Both areas have rugged terrain and will cause the same storm that saw rapid intensification Sunday morning to start to weaken slightly prior to landfall.

With that said the forecast continues to call for a strong Typhoon pushing on shore. From Quang Binh – Hue Vietnam Typhoon Warnings are in place with weaker warnings extending outwards to the north and south. Storm surge will be one of the main threats with the worst of it being along the northern periphery of the center of circulation as it makes landfall. Heavy rain triggering landslides will be a problem farther inland as Typhoon Wutip pushes on shore bringing with it over 200-300mm of rainfall likely.

Large waves will also be a problem for coastal areas. Many fishermen have taken proper action ahead of the storm seeking safe harbor while the entire Navy fleet at Quang Binh have disembarked according to local media. Seeking shelter at sea where the ships can ride out the storm vice being slammed against piers in harbor with no ability to manuever.

At this time Wutip looks to make landfall near Dong Hoi around 8-10PM local on Monday as a Typhoon.

The winds will subside in the storm by Tuesday afternoon but the remnant low will continue to track inland bringing heavy showers as far west as Thailand through the coming week. Damaging winds and heavy rains will be a threat not only to Vietnam but also for Laos and even into Thailand as well.
