Utain Boonmee, 20, and 31-year-old Somkid Wongsridee confessed to having jointly carried out the attack. After initial questioning of the two suspects, police determined that the incident was the result of a quarrel among teenaged youth.

Police said the two men were drunk when they arrived at the temple fair. Their drunken condition may have contributed the grenade missing the target, and killing and wounding many who were uninvolved in the teenagers’ dispute.

Nong Bua Lamphu governor Athikom Suwanapong and senior police officials inspected the scene in front of the stage where a local musical group performed at a celebration for a new pavilion at Wat Sirimongkol, a Buddhist temple in Sriboonrueang district. Police said Mr. Utain threw a hand grenade belonging to Mr. Somkid, who had bought it from an acquaintance in the northeastern province of Loei for Bt500.

The pair said that they came to enjoy the fair with friends, but carried they grenade as they were always fighting with other teenagers at similar events.

They lobbed a hand grenade wanting to attack the rival group after having disputes in front of the stage but the bomb was exploded in the crowded. Seven persons reportedly died and more than 100 were wounded and received medical attention in hospital. (TNA)
