Two Iranian Sneak Thieves Swell Number of Foreign Thefts in Pattaya

Thailand in general and Pattaya in particular seem to be being currently targeted by international thieves, both gangs and individuals. The latest case concerns two Iranians who tried to unsuccessfully sneak goods they had stolen past security guards at Big C Department Store, North Pattaya.

Pattaya, 28 October 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: Two Iranian nationals were caught red-handed at 11.00pm on October 27, stealing from Big C department Store by one of their security guards. Searching the two suspects, it was found that they had stolen goods to the value of Bt80,000, including items of  clothing, stationery, cosmetics, wallets, and other items. The security guard promptly performed a citizen’s arrest before notifying police.

A police team was dispatched by the leading duty officer, Police Captain Somchai Chaikhananukun (Pattaya Police Deputy Chief Inspector), and they arrived at the incident scene to find the two suspects, Messrs Noffiti [39] and Arakoli [32] being held in the custody of security.

The Big C Security spokesman, Mr. Niwat Thongbut [25], told police that initially the Iranians had appeared at the checkout with 10 items for which they had paid. However, they then sneaked back into the store and put a considerable number of items into bags and then tried to leave the store without paying. Their little ploy was scotched, however, by an alert security guard who subsequently detained the suspicious pair and asked to see the contents of their bags, thus discovering the theft they would have perpetrated had they got away with it.

The pair of Iranians later made a full confession to police, who, still suspicious, insisted on seeing their room at the Aisawan Hotel, North Pattaya. Here, police found further items which it is suspected were also stolen from other shops. The evidence was duly confiscated and further checks are being carried out. The pair have been arrested and charged with the initial theft, however, it is very likely that further charges will be brought against them if the goods in their room are found to have been stolen, too.
