The Officers from the Indonesia Red Cross Association stated that there were upto 105 people already confirmed dead, 148 wounded and 127 were still missing. Another 2875 had to be evacuated to safety. It is anticipated that the figures and scale of damage will increase. There are still scores of people missing from the tidal waves as high as 1.5 metres that hit the beach of Pagandaran just 270 kilometers, southeast of Jakarta. The waves had caused a lot of damage to as many as 650 fishing boats. The tide went as far up half a kilometer on to the main land, causing many buildings to tumble. At the moment, the Officers required tents, food and medical supplies to help those effected.

The Tsunami Warning Centre of the Pacific Ocean informed that the earthquake was measured 7.2 on the Rictor Scale. While the USA Department of Geology said it recorded a 7.7 while the Indonesia Department of Meteorology and Geology stated that it was 6.8. With the centre in the south of Chawa Island of Indonesia or at the Lattitude 9.0 degree south, longtitude 17.3 degree eastern. At 16.13 hrs and the after shock had occurred with the size of 6.3 (from USGS) and 17.09 hrs, 6.0 respectively. There was a 2 meter wave in Chawa Isaland claiming 6 lives. The Department of Meteorology anticipated that the earthquake that took place was due to the Reverse Fault and would not affect Thailand. Because the Sumatra and Chawa Island is acting as a blockage and is situated some 2,000 Kilometers from Phuket .

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden anticipated that there were 2 Swedish children who were on holiday with their family were missing. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Netherlands had requested that all Tourist Companies over the effected areas
report that all their customers were safe. Unfortunately, the missing tourists have not yet been reported regarding their whereabouts so as to confirm their status, although at time of interview it was reported that there were still 4 Dutch nationals missing.

Mr. Podpasop Surasawadee, the Director of National Threat Centre mentioned that the size of this earthquake was measured 7.2 on the Rictor Scale, with the centre in the south of Chawa Island, Indonesia or Bandong, an old city of Chawa Island. Mr Podpasop stated that at areound 18.00 hrs, he received a report from the Threat Center of Indonesia that a local Tsunami had occurred, with the wave as high as 2 metres being spottted and had washed away parts of the coast. At that stage it was reported that about 4 and 5 people had been perished and washed away in the waves. Thai people do not have to be worried that such event will occur in Thailand because even if the Tsunami is much strong than this it will not reach Thailand because the Chawa Isaland will stand in the way of the waves‘ path and there is cause for panic.
