Hua Hin district was also the scene of a train crash on 14 January, 2007, where the Yala- Bangkok express, was rammed by the Langsuan-Thonburi train in Nongkae railway station.

Seven of the victims in today’s derailment were women and two men, with another dead victim yet to be recovered; all Thai 65 injured passengers have already been sent to nearby hospitals. Rescue trains from Bangkok’s Bangsue and Thungsong stations and Thungsong station were sent in to help lift the six derailed carriages; however, according to Yutthana Thapcharoen, disruption to the Bangkok-south services are likely to last for more than one day, with all service on the route currently suspended.

Another railway official said “We hope we can clear the tracks as soon as possible and we expect the service to resume tomorrow. We are transporting several hundreds of passengers from four trains, including the one in the accident, to Bangkok.”

Fewer passengers were injured in this derailment than those involved in the train crash in Chiang Mai, on, November 27, 2006, where 130 were injured and unlike in that crash, there were no foreigners involved in the present incident.

Police Colonel Krisna Jamsaweng, Hua Hin’s chief of police said police were investigating the cause of the current incident.
