PATTAYA – March 6, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 5 p.m., a meeting was called at the Pattaya police station by Pol. Maj. Gen. Niwat Rattanatharmmawat, Deputy Commissioner, section 2. He summoned Pol. Col. Suwan Cheawnawinthawat, Superintendent; and the related investigation and detective police teams.

He called the meeting to ask for all details of the case where a Russian engineer had apparently been strangled by a belt. The incident took place during the early morning hours in a 2nd-floor room at the Sutus Court hotel on Soi Buakhao. The victim was identified as Mr. Andrei Komapob, age 40, engineer and executive of an architecture company in Saint Petersburg

The police also brought in a 30-year-old Thai woman for questioning. She was identified by CCTV footage as one of two Thai females entering the victim’s room in the days before his death. Police questioned her for about an hour, and then released her. They did not reveal any information about her.

Police are still seeking the other Thai woman who seen entering and leaving the victim’s room twice on the night of his death. The Thai woman was identified as Ms. Thanyanan Arj-euam, age 37, address 38 Moo 7 Tambon Thavorn, Amphur Chalermphrakiet, Buriram province.

The CCTV showed she came to see Mr. Andrei in his room at 1:48 a.m. Then she went out to buy some goods, and came back within a short period of time. Then at approximately 2:33 a.m., Ms. Thanyanan left the room again. Mr. Andrei was seen standing at his front door during her departure.

After that, no one came to the victim’s room, according to the CCTV. Later that morning, Mr. Andrei’s corpse was found in the room by the bellboy, after Mr. Andrei did not show up at the front desk to check out.

Police found evidence that the Russian had been strangled by a belt, and there was evidence of a struggle. Later, Pol. Maj. Gen. Niwat took a detective team to the hotel again to inspect behind the victim’s room, to see if anyone could have accessed the room from there and avoided the CCTV.

If Mr. Andrea was murdered, then the murderer might have used a route behind the room. The police spent about 30 minutes checking the scene again.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Niwat revealed that the Russian’s death attracted the attention of Pol. Lt. Gen. Vinai Thongsong, Commissioner, section 2, who is interested in this case because it relates to foreign tourists.

The Police deputy commissioner is afraid that the crime will negatively impact the good image of Meuang Pattaya, so he ordered the police commander to thoroughly inspect the facts of this case.

From checking the history of the victim, police found that he is an engineer and the executive of LGIT Co., Ltd., a company that designs the buildings and construction and architecture. He came to travel at Pattaya on February 16, 2013.

So far the police investigation has not revealed conclusively whether the victim was murdered or not. Possible scenarios might include that the victim had committed suicide, or had died during erotic asphyxiation while having sex. The police have not yet ruled out any possible causes for his death.

The detective police team was ordered to find Mrs. Thanyanan, the woman who was last seen with the victim while he was still alive, as an important key to this case. The police are also waiting for the autopsy results from the Forensic police to determine exactly how the victim died.
