By means of X-rays, the researchers evaluated periodontitis (chronic gum disease) amongst mean by computing the quantity of bone loss in the tooth cavities. Study shows that, men with tongue cancer has more likely to loss bone compare to those without the disease. Statistics are 4.21 millimeters versus 2.74 millimeters.

“After adjusting for the effects of age, smoking status and the number of teeth, each millimeter of [cavity] bone loss was significantly associated with a 5.23-fold increase in the risk of tongue cancer,” the study authors wrote. “Other oral variables (the number of dental decays, fillings, crowns and root canal treatments) were not significantly associated with the risk for tongue cancer.”

The researchers conjectured that periodontal bacteria and viruses might be poisonous to surrounding cells and cause transformations that directly lead to oral cancer. Inflammation may also be a cause, that indirectly adds to cancer.

Researches stated that this first round data proposes a connection between periodontitis and tongue cancer. However, a wide range of studies on women and on other race/ethnic groups needs to be performed, so as to verify this relationship.
